Thursday 27th November

Music for Change continues its series of live music events presenting a night of world & jazz music at The Ballroom, Canterbury.

GLASSHOUSE is a World-jazz Sextet that combines the best of modern groove-based music from North Africa and the US with absorbing original compositions. Their material stretches from Santana to Salah Ragab and the Cairo Jazz Band, from Fela Kuti to Cuba’s Willie Bobo.

Original compositions exploit the sax-trumpet leads of Daniel Cano and Peter Cook and promote the understated talents of drummer Matt Goodsmith and singer/percussionist Kevin Richards. Italian bass supremo Maurizio Borgna finds ingenious ways to bind these front and back line activities! Martin Goodsmith heads up the band on guitar and keys and is responsible for the band’s original material. The distinctive ‘band sound’ comes from a carefully selected set based on fun, dance-ability and originality.

Featured music also includes Fela Kuti, Ernest Ranglin and the Neville Brothers.

Support comes from new three-piece MAHALAS: Their music is a fusion inspired by Indian, Arabic and African music traditions. Mahalas consists of Dan Sayers on Bansouri flute and slide ukulele, Charlie Welch on bass and djembe drums, and Yiannis Zaronis on guitar, vocals and darabukka. The group performs original material and an eclectic mix of world music melodies with an emphasis on improvisation . Up beat rhythms and haunting melodies are just some of the characteristics of Mahalas music.
